Pueblo mother says she was escorted out of her son’s school because she smelled like marijuana

It’s a parent-teacher conference one Pueblo mom didn’t expect. She said the meeting ended abruptly at the Heroes Academy on Friday and she was escorted out of the school when a staff member said she smelled like marijuana.

Emily Rayfield said she moved to Colorado from Nebraska to have a better life. She said she smokes marijuana for medicinal purposes and uses a marijuana lotion for psoriasis and arthritis.

She also wants a better life for her son. On Friday, Rayfield said she went to her son’s school to find classes that would fit her son’s needs. She said she walked for two hours from her home on Pueblo’s East Side to Heroes Academy on the West Side, and then she said the unexpected happened.

“A teacher and a school officer came in and they tell me that the smell is appalling, and I thought they were talking about paint,” she said.

Rayfield said when they smelled marijuana on her, the meeting was canceled and a school resource officer escorted her out of the building.

According to Pueblo City School District 60, there isn’t a policy in place for when a staff member smells marijuana on a parent. The district also said policies are always considered for revision. Rayfield wonders what she did wrong.

“The biggest part is why did it matter? I didn’t have it on me,” she said.

D60 said it is going to investigate what happened.
