Mock crash shows Pueblo West students dangers of drinking, driving
Students at Pueblo West High School watched a staged drunk driving crash unfold in front of the school, just days before juniors and seniors celebrate their prom.
“As soon as the first responders get here and Flight for Life gets here, it gets very realistic very quickly,” said Ryan McFarlin, the student body president who helped organize the event.
Juniors and seniors watched on the front lawn as fellow classmates played out the scene of a fatal crash involving alcohol, with the help of Pueblo West Fire, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, Flight for Life and AMR.
“It really opened people’s eyes. It kind of made them think — wow, this is real. Like this weekend, this could happen to me if I make bad decisions or bad choices,” said junior Jared Davidson.
Even for the actors, who are drama students at the school, the mock crash quickly looked very real.
“I actually started crying because Adri’s one of my closest friends and that was the girl that was in our car that had died. So it was emotional,” said junior Alex Fetty.
Pueblo West Firefighter Brad Davidson said he hopes the mock crash sparks a conversation between parents and their children about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
