Baltimore mom sparks parenting debate
Baltimore mom Toya Graham says she spotted her 16-year-old son taking part in the riots in Baltimore and didn’t think of the cameras. Graham is seen in the video hitting her son as he tries to get away from her.
Most are praising the mother on social media, using the hashtag #BaltimoreMom to call her a hero and an example of good parenting.
But not everyone is convinced. Some question her choice of hitting her son and worry it sets a bad example for other parents.
Karen Logan with the Department of Human Services in El Paso County told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that the department does not condone hitting, but she can see why people would support the mother given the context of the situation.
“Clearly the child was bigger than the mother was, but does that make it OK? I think it’s difficult to say and I think people would have different ideas regardless of what the situation was and the context,” Logan said.
In Colorado, it is not against the law for a parent to strike a child, whether it be in public or private. However, it is considered abuse if that strike injures the child in any way.
