UPDATE: Teen says car vandalized during “near riot” at Colorado Springs carnival

A Colorado Springs teenage said her car was vandalized during a series of small fights that quickly escalated at the carnival near North Powers and Palmer Park Boulevards.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies first responded to the scene around 9 p.m. Saturday. A number of fights were underway when deputies arrived, and the situation quickly escalated. The Colorado Springs Police Department and Colorado State Patrol were called in to help calm the situation around 9:45 p.m.

Madison Velazquez attended the carnival with her friends. She said she noticed fights as soon as she arrived.

“Right from the start there were a lot of fights and a lot of about-to-be fights. Just a lot of chaos,” said Velazquez.

Managers at the carnival made the decision to close around 10 p.m. after speaking with law enforcement personnel, but the fight continued.

Velazquez said she tried to leave when it was shut down, only to find the back window of her Jeep was smashed. It costs more than $300 to fix the window. She hopes the people responsible are caught and pay up.

“If you have issues with other people, maybe you should be doing this at a carnival where there are other people,” said Velazquez.

Police officers say that roughly 150 people attempted to knock over the carnival’s two ticket booths, with employees still inside. Officers formed a protective line and ordered the crowd to step back. The crowd complied, but continued to taunt officers and throw objects at them for another half hour.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office made three arrests. The police department did not make any arrests.

The Sheriff’s Office said no injuries have been reported.

People showed up on Sunday to ask for refunds. Luis Ramos said he was told he couldn’t get any money back, and he left frustrated. He brought his children for a fun night, only to have it ruined shortly after they arrived.

“[My children] they were disappointed last night, they came home crying due to all the fights. They didn’t get to enjoy their night,” said Ramos.

Carnival workers tore down the event on Sunday. The carnival’s managers did not respond to KRDO NewsChannel 13’s request for comment.
