Facility that serves developmentally disabled community investigated
The Colorado Department of Human Services says multiple allegations are being investigated at its Pueblo Regional Center facility.
The facility provides housing and care for people with developmental disabilities.
CDHS Executive Director Reggie Bicha said the allegations that are being investigated include physical abuse, unlawful sexual contact and verbal abuse. He said many of the alleged incidents appear to have been unreported or underreported.
“The safety and well-being of the individuals entrusted to our care and the stability of our regional center system is paramount,” Bicha said.
A total of 11 staff members have been placed on administrative leave with pay. Eight employees were placed on leave on Wednesday, three others were put on leave last month. Bicha did not identify the employees but said it includes direct care staff and senior management, which includes the facility’s director.
Teresa Bernal has been appointed interim Director of the Pueblo Regional Center.
The CDHS says that in addition to Bernal, a team of professional staff and care providers are being brought in to ensure high quality care is provided at the facility.
The investigation involves the CDHS, The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and a third-party investigative agency. Staff members at the Pueblo Regional Center will also be interviewed as part of the investigation.
“Staff should feel comfortable talking with these professionals, and I encourage them to partake in this process to help us in ensuring the high standard of care the parents and guardians rely on us to provide,” Bicha said.
The Pueblo Regional Center serves 62 clients throughout its 11 group homes in Pueblo West. CDHS hasn’t said how many people may have been affected.
