Men accused of stealing, selling equipment from Fort Carson in court

Four men are accused of stealing equipment, including sensitive technology, from Fort Carson and then selling it online.

The suspects include two active duty soldiers. They have been identified as Staff Sergeant Benjamin Cardwell, 41, and Sergeant Johnny Herrera, 29, of Fort Carson.

The other two suspects are Daniel Francis, 50, and Todd Crow, 34. Both are from Colorado Springs.

Each man faces one count of conspiracy to commit theft of government property. They were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning for detention hearings.

“Dedicated investigative work by a team of federal law enforcement agents led to the identification of a ring of thieves who are alleged to have stolen government property, selling it through a co-conspirator,” said U.S. Attorney John Walsh. “The stolen goods covered the gamut, from batteries, to MREs, to sensitive technology, and was mostly sold on eBay. This investigation is ongoing as we seek to track what was taken, where it went, and what was sold, and then follow the money.”

“Fort Carson is unable to comment on the specifics of the ongoing investigation. Fort Carson is collaborate fully with all involved agencies,” said Lt. Colonel Armando Hernandez,” Fort Carson Spokesperson.

The Department of Justice says that the men face up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 if they are convicted.
