Local man critically injured in motorcycle crash

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a motorcycle accident that left a man in critical condition this weekend.

The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Chromium and Saphire drives in east Colorado Springs.

The name of the driver has not been released.

Troopers said the man was driving north on Chromium Drive at a high rate of speed, apparently lost control and went through a fence on the east side of the street.

The man was not wearing a helmet, troopers said.

Paramedics with the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the crash and said the street had sand or gravel remaining from winter storms, and that possibly caused the driver to lose control.

Troopers said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the accident.

Another crash at about 4 p.m. Saturday involved two motorcycles racing on Union Boulevard at Constitution Avenue, Colorado Springs police said.

The driver of one motorcycle was treated for minor injuries after hitting a vehicle, police said, and was cited for DUI, driving with a revoked license and other traffic offenses.

Police said the other motorcycle driver left the area before they arrived, and that the driver of the vehicle was not injured.
