Police and Distracted Driving

Authorities in Larimer County are not immune to problems with distracted driving.

Officers warn people about using smartphones, GPS systems and touch-screen car radios while driving, but police also have to deal with squawking radios and on-board computers.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reportsin Fort Collins alone, police officers were found at fault in 79 crashes since April 1, 2009. Seven were due to distracted driving, and officers were cited twice. Details of those accidents were not available.

Officers are allowed to use their computers for official business, but they are barred from using their equipment for Internet browsing, social media or emails.
