Colorado Springs is cleaning out retention ponds
Summer is coming and so is flood season.
The city of Colorado Springs is working hard to reduce the chance for deadly flooding on the west side of the city.
To make sure that the water doesn’t rise when heavy rain falls, the city is removing the sediment that has built up in the retention ponds that it has built since flooding in late 2013.
There are more than a dozen ponds that have been constructed since the Waldo Canyon fire, but that’s not the only thing that the city has done.
Along 31st Street, Camp Creek has been cleared out as well south of Fontanero Street.
KRDO talked to a neighbor in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood and asked her if she thought that flooding was still possible despite the mitigation efforts.
“There’s a possibility, there’s a possibility anywhere in town,” said Kathy Dooley.
Dooley said that the water has never flooded her house, but it’s come close to the top of the creek bed since the Waldo Canyon fire.
