Police oversight bills getting more complicated in Colorado

A package of Colorado bills to give police more oversight gets more complicated Thursday when a House committee starts work on proposals about racial profiling and chokeholds.

The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to take up more bills proposed in response to allegations of police misconduct in Colorado and elsewhere.

Unlike some of the earlier police bills, these don’t have the support of Republicans or police groups.

One measure would expand the existing prohibition against profiling by a peace officer. The bill would add gender and sexual identity to the list of factors that may not be used.

Another bill would forbid officers from using chokeholds. Police groups have said they support expanded training, but that chokeholds can save lives when done properly and shouldn’t be banned.
