UPDATE: Dog lost after fire reunited with family thanks to KRDO NewsChannel 13 viewer

A Colorado Springs family that had their home damaged by fire Tuesday could have lost so much more.

The fire damaged a home near the 200 block of north Franklin Street. A family made up of three people and two dogs was displaced.

Colorado Springs firefighters reunited one dog with the family. The other dog, a corgi named Lotus, ran away in the confusion.

“When the fire department knocked the door down, she just happened to bolt out and she was scared. One of our neighbors tried to chase her down the road,” said dog owner Andrea Martens. “But, they couldn’t catch her because she was so fast.”

Martens was desperate to get her back.

“I really didn’t know if I was going to see her again,” said Martens.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 viewer Aaron Farquhar was walking near Monument Creek five hours later when he spotted Lotus.

He contacted KRDO NewsChannel 13 and was able to reunite Lotus and Martens.

“I just started crying when I knew it was her,” said Martens.

“I am so relieved that I found the owner, made a big difference in their life,” said Farquhar.

Martens said her family has lost a lot of things in the flames. But she said everything that really matters is OK. She is also grateful for the help from a stranger.

“The gift he has given me of giving my dog back, I can’t repay him, I am so thankful,” said Martens.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The family is staying with relatives.
