Police cameras, officer training under review in Colorado

A measure to encourage police departments to buy body cameras for officers headlines another batch of law enforcement oversight bills up for debate at the Colorado Legislature.

A House committee starts work Tuesday on the body camera bill and three other measures aimed at increasing oversight in the wake of alleged police misconduct in Colorado and elsewhere.

The body-camera bill would create a grant program to pay for the cameras but not require all departments to buy them.

Another bill would revise officer training standards to include an anti-bias course and something called “de-escalation training” to try to prevent conflicts.

Three of the bills have bipartisan supporters. But one is backed only by Democrats. That’s a bill to prohibit officers from interfering with citizens lawfully recording an incident.
