Dynel Lane’s former father-in-law upset murder charges won’t be filed

The former father-in-law of a Longmont woman accused of cutting a baby from a woman’s womb is upset to hear that she won’t be facing any murder charges.

Michael Lane’s son, Christopher, married Dynel Lane in 2010. Michael Lane said the two were married for about a year. He told KRDO NewsChannel 13 he’s thankful that they didn’t have any kids together.

“Very grateful, considering the circumstances. Very grateful. I would say we dodged a bullet there,” he said.

Michael Lane is still taking in recent news that Dynel Lane won’t face any murder charges stemming from the attack in Longmont last week. Investigators said Michelle Wilkins, 26, was attacked when she went to Dynel Lane’s Longmont home in response to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes on March 18. Wilkins survived the attack.

“I know it’s a controversial situation about when the fetus is a living, breathing human being, but in this case I think we have to apply the murder charge here,” he said.

Dynel Lane faces several felony charges, including criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree and unlawful termination of murder in the first degree.

Michael Lane is worried that Dynel Lane may try to plead guilty by reason of insanity, but he said she showed no signs of being insane when she was married to his son.

“She was just real quiet, never said much, but there was never any sign that she was capable of something like this.”

Although Michael Lane’s son was married to Dynel Lane for a brief time, he’s already been contacted to assist in the investigation.

“My son has been contacted by the prosecutor and the public defender from Longmont and they have interviewed him,” Michael Lane said. “The public defender [is] trying to present an insanity plea and he might be subpoenaed to talk.”

Michael Lane extended his support to Wilkins and her family.

“I hope the family’s able to live somewhat of a normal life after this. I know it’s going to be hard. I wish the best for them. I truly do,” Michael Lane said.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 asked to speak with Michael Lane’s son but he said his son had no comment at this time.
