Second train derails in as many days in Weld County

Crews are repairing damaged railroad tracks after another train derailment in Weld County.

Three cars on a Union Pacific train came off the tracks Monday night between Evans and LaSalle near U.S. Highway 85 just south of the South Platte River. No one was injured.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says about 200 feet of track were damaged.

The Greeley Tribune reports that it’s not known what, if any, cargo the cars were carrying but UP told the newspaper it definitely wasn’t oil.

On Sunday, about 30 freight cars on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed near Hudson, spilling tons of coal and diverting Amtrak trains. That line reopened Monday afternoon.

The cause of both derailments are under investigation.
