Council approves pay increase for mayor, utility bill decrease

Colorado Springs City Council voted on several important issues Tuesday.

First, council approved an ordinance to increase the salary for the position of mayor to $103,370. The old salary was $96,000.

Colorado Springs voters will elect a new mayor on April 7.

Also Tuesday, council approved a plan by Colorado Springs Utilities to reduce the electric cost adjustment. The change means a typical residential customer will see a 72-cent decrease in their monthly bill. The change will take effect on April 1.

Utilities says it proposed the change because the price of natural gas has gone down, and because the Drake Power Plant is fully back online following last year’s fire.
