Uncle accused of killing niece told police: ‘Why did you pick me God?’

An uncle accused of driving drunk and killing his niece made his first court appearance on Monday.

Danny Case, 34, was arrested Friday after police said he crashed a Ford Ranger into a home, killing his niece, six-year-old Alexis Case. It happened around 7:15 p.m. on the 500 block of Starlite Drive.

According to an arrest affidavit for Case, when police arrested him his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and he had a strong smell of alcohol. When asked if he had been drinking, Case told police he had two beers earlier that day and said it took him “a couple of hours” to drink them. He told police he started drinking “a little after twelve, noon.” Case added that his brother had also been at his home drinking.

Police said Case had been in an argument with his brother, Charles Case, who’s also the victim’s father, moments before the crash at a nearby address.

Danny Case told officers he had parked his truck to talk with his brother when the crash happened and said “he would never do anything to hurt his niece.”

Once he was taken to jail, he was told that his actions ended his niece’s life. The arrest affidavit states that Danny Case showed no remorse, stared at the wall and said, “why did you pick me God, why me?”

KRDO NewsChannel 13 has learned that Danny Case has a criminal history of driving under the influence. He was arrested for DUIs in 2003, 2005 and 2007. He was sentenced to probation.

Danny Case’s lawyer asked Magistrate Dorothy Radakovich on Monday to lower his bond, but she kept it at $150,000 because of the seriousness of the offense.

Danny Case faces several charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving and no proof of insurance.
