Political expert: Ted Cruz early presidential bid is right on time

Political experts say Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz’ early presidential campaign announcement could help improve his public perception.

Cruz announced his presidential bid at Liberty University in Virginia on Monday, saying he believes “in the power of millions of courageous conservatives rising up to reignite the promise of America.”

Political science expert, Bob Loevy, told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he viewed Cruz’ announcement as good timing. A recent CNN/ORC poll of potential Republican candidates showed Cruz in the middle of the pack with just four percent support.

“If you’re one of the lesser known candidates, which Ted Cruz is, deciding to run early is really a good idea,” Loevy said. “Get your name out there. Let everyone know you’re running. Be one of the first people to get the publicity you need to win some of those early primaries and caucuses.”

Cruz is considered one of the more conservative candidates. Loevy said he expects Cruz to try to appeal to conservative Republicans throughout the primaries, then take a less divisive stance should he gain the Republican nomination.

“Ted Cruz’ problem is going to be the other very conservative candidates and they’ll all be trying hard to see who can out-conservative each other,” Loevy said.

Other Republicans expected to run include former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
