Vietnam veterans honor fallen soldiers
Dozens of Vietnam veterans and their families gathered to remember a battle fought nearly 50 years ago.
Thirty-six United States soldiers died during the Battle of Soui Tre on March 21, 1967.
“We were outnumbered by approximately eight to one,” Joe Engles said. “That battle became who we were and who we were after because it was so extremely violent.”
Those who fought in the battle say it’s important to honor those who were injured serving their country.
“Our wounded exceeds what the history books say and we can never leave these guys out ever,” Engles said. “We remember them today and we remember our fallen brothers.”
Their sacrifice is inspiring current service members.
“It was pretty humbling actually, listening to the stories of what they’ve been through,” soldier Nathaniel Williamson said. “It shows us what we can accomplish by showing us what they did.”
After the ceremony, veterans took time to greet each other and take pictures. They said they will never forget their experience serving overseas.
“There is a camaraderie that we shared by bullets then and now it’s in peace now,” Engles said. “We attempt to let go and just be with each other because we do share a bond that’s extraordinary.”
