Homeowners urged to prepare for flood risks, other emergencies
As spring begins, homeowners living near high-risk flood areas are getting ready for emergency situations.
In 2013, many properties along Cheyenne Creek were damaged because of flooding.
“(There was) a lot of stress, it was something that just unexpectedly happened,” Duane Calvillo said. “We had to replace a lot of things that were destroyed by water.”
The El Paso County Office of Emergency Management said it’s never too early for people to prepare for floods or other emergencies.
“Find out what your flood risk is, and be aware of your area around you,” Outreach Coordinator Robin Adair said. “Monitor television, radio, weather service, whatever your weather information station is, in the case of rainfall to find out what the current situation is so that you won’t be surprised by anything.”
Adair also suggests having a family plan – decide things like how you’ll communicate and who will take care of kids and pets if necessary.
She said everyone should sign up for emergency notifications at ElPasoTeller911.org.
