Colorado lawmakers unveiling police oversight bills
Colorado legislators unveiled legislation to increase oversight on law enforcement, including expanding the use of body cameras and collecting data on fatal confrontations.
Lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon discussed 10 proposals they’re introducing. They’re a response to allegations of excessive force both in the state and nationally.
Among the bills being introduced are measures to create a grant program to encourage the use of body cameras, and gathering data on officer-involved shootings. Other bills would allow law enforcement agencies to look at an officer’s job history, including incidents of misconduct, prior to their hiring.
Lawmakers are also examining the proper use of chokeholds and appointing special prosecutors to review decisions not to charge an officer when deadly force is used or excessive force is alleged.
Some of the bills have bipartisan support.
