School board member sentenced on cocaine charge

A school board member for the Centennial School District has been given a deferred sentence for possession of cocaine.

Costilla County District Court Judge Michael Gonzales also gave Augustine Esquibel probation for resisting arrest.

Esquibel was arrested in May after a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies in which he allegedly yelled obscenities and flicked a lit cigarette at a deputy’s chest.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports fellow school board member Lori Espinoza praised Esquibel as a mentor and advocate for students who had worked hard to make sure problems with the new Centennial school building were fixed.
