Boy, 2, rescued after getting stuck in sump pump

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says a 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after spending 20 minutes trapped in a sump pump hole.

The call for help came from a home in the 3500 block of Red Baron Drive around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters from Security and Colorado Springs responded to the call.

Firefighter Darin Meek pulled the boy from the hole.

“We took a look at all the personnel we had on scene. I was essentially the skinniest so I stripped down to my bunkers, and had them tie off my ankles and they were able to lower me head first into the hole,” said Meek.

But it was a scary situation, even for the fire captain.

“It’s a big fear to go into a dark hole. I know he was scared. He was whimpering. I have no doubt he was terrified. I trusted my crew to get me out. They said if we can get you in, we can get you out,” said Meek.

Neek said Wednesday’s rescue should serve as a warning for the community to check hazards outside their homes and make sure sump pump holes are secure.

“It was a case of a curious child. Our biggest concern is do we have other ones like that in this community and they are unsecure. I am a grown man and I was able to fit down in that hole,” said Meek.

Neighbor Jessica Brown said she plans to be more vigilant.

“I didn’t know that, that was news to me,” said Brown. “We are going to have to see where our neighbors’ [pump] is just to be safe so if our daughter ever goes over there, she doesn’t have a similar situation.”

The Sheriff’s Office says the boy lives at the home where the incident happened.

Sump pumps are commonly installed in basements to pump excess water out to prevent flooding.
