Coloradans tired of the time change push for change

If you’re tired of the time change, you’re not alone.

A group of Coloradans is pushing to keep Colorado on daylight saving time all year round.

Caleb Thorne is a volunteer for the petitioners in Colorado Springs. He said when he heard a couple in Lakewood was starting the movement, he was immediately on board.

“As a relatively new father, it just screws up the whole sleep schedule for kids. It’s kind of a pain,” Thorne told KRDO NewsChannel 13. “Before it was sort of a mild annoyance, now it’s getting a little more serious.”

Thorne cited safety issues as part of the reason to keep daylight later in the day.

“There’s been studies that have shown that there are fewer fatalities, pedestrian fatalities as well as accidents from changing the time,” Thorne said. “In the evening, there’s usually more alcohol in peoples’ systems, they’re off from a day of work, they’re tired, they’re in a rush to get home and they’re not as alert and you add darkness in the mix in the evenings and it’s just a bad result.”

But many are against the switch and similar measures have failed in Colorado in the past.

Laura Ricks expressed concern to KRDO NewsChannel 13 for children heading to school early in the morning.

“Daylight saving time is fine in the summer, but if we keep it all winter long the kids will be going to school in the middle of the night. That’s just ridiculous,” Ricks said. “I don’t like the idea of staying on daylight saving at all.”

Ski resorts have also been against the move in the past, saying it’s important for crews to do avalanche control in the early morning hours.

Petitioners have until Aug. 26th to collect about 98,000 signatures. If there are enough valid signatures, the issue will go on the November 2016 ballot. To learn more about the daylight saving time push, click here.
