Nonprofits in Pueblo County could receive a boost in funding

It’s grant money that comes at the right time for the winter in Pueblo.

The federal government has given close to a $100,000 to the Pueblo County United Way for emergency food and shelter programs in the area.

Jim Mertz works for the Salvation Army in Pueblo. He said his group can benefit from the grant money. He also said it is essential especially during the colder months.

“When the weather gets this cold, we have to hire staff, we have insurance to pay, we have the heating bill which tends to go up when it is very cold outside, it has to be warmer inside,” he said.

The Salvation Army can have up to 40 people stay overnight in its shelter.
