Dog rescue group approaches milestone
National Mill Dog Rescue in Peyton is expecting to reach a milestone in a few months.
The organization rescues and rehomes dogs from commercial breeding facilities,
usually referred to as “puppy mills”, and hopes to rescue its 10,000 th dog.
National Mill Dog Rescue was founded in 2007 by Theresa Strader, after she answered a call to help Italian Greyhounds that were being sold at a dog auction in Missouri. That is when she first met Lily, the disfigured Italian Greyhound that inspired her mission to save dogs that were no longer useful in the commercial dog breeding industry.
Strader credits the hundreds of volunteers who share her passion. “Mill Dog Rescue, I put it on its feet, and it ends right there. It’s the hard work of an awful lot of people that made it a successful organization”, she tells KRDO NewsChannel 13.
National Mill Dog Rescue recently completed “Operation Hundred Hearts”, in which they saved 101 dogs. Volunteers are currently working to rehabilitate the dogs and get them ready for their “forever homes”.
Theresa Strader was featured in People Magazine in its “Heroes Among Us” segment in theNovember 19, 2012 issue, but insists she doesn’t think of herself as a hero. “I’m just a regular ole dog loving lady,” says Strader.
