Colorado Springs street crews geared up for three-day storm

One day into this three-day snowstorm, Colorado Springs Streets Supervisor Jack Ladley said he will be tied to his phone through the weekend.

“Just the duration. I think that’s gonna be the thing that wears on us,” he said. “Equipment wears down, people get tired, get sick, those types of things.”

And drivers are tied to their plow trucks.

“This is what we train for. I kinda like serving the public like this,” said plow driver Jubal Rentas.

They’re busy trying to get ahead of a storm that has already thrown drivers for a loop along Southgate.

“If I get a lot of snow, it’s a waste of time to put material down,” Ladley said. “At that point, it’s putting the plows down and getting the heavy snow. Once the heavy snow breaks, it’s an opportunity to put materials down.”

In terms of supplies, Ladley says the division is ready after a new supply of salt and sand came in last Monday.

“In terms of the duration in that regard, I’m not worried,” he said.

But they are worried about a big factor: Ice.

“An event like this is going to get in front of us. But if Mother Nature gets us a break, we’ll cover that gap, we’ll make that up,” Ladley said.

Crews spent most of Saturday trying to help clear multiple slide-offs. They hoped less traffic overnight Saturday would help them clear roads faster.
