Auto repair shop offers preparation tips for winter driving
As drivers brace for more snow, local mechanics are preparing for an increase in auto repairs.
But there are ways to prepare your car and avoid costly repair bills.
“The biggest thing we see with the cold weather is people with weak batteries,”Mike McNally said. He is the manager ofAspen Auto Clinic on Union Boulevard. “You want to make sure you have a good, fresh battery in your car. Otherwise, you might get stuck with a dead battery.”
McNally has some tips for drivers before they head out in a snow storm. He believes some routine maintenance can make a big difference on icy roads.
“Be sure to check your fluids this time of year. Make sure your washer fluid is full, and keep an eye on your coolant,” he said. “As it gets colder, antifreeze gets thicker and it makes it harder on your engine.”
McNally recommends checking tire pressure regularly.
“The tire expands when it is warm. That’s why you want to check your tires when they’re cold. That will give you a more accurate pressure,”McNally said.
You also want to check your tire tread. Bald tires can be hazardous on ice and snow.
“Tread is really important,” McNally said. “It doesn’t mean you’ll go faster when the roads are slick, but it’ll give you more control.”
McNally said Aspen Auto Clinic sees an increase in car repairs after a snowstorm.
“We get a lot of cars towed in from hitting curbs on slick streets,” he said. “It causes a lot of damage. Curbs can bend a lot of parts underneath the suspension.”
