DA: Trooper justified in shooting man during traffic stop

The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office says a Colorado State Trooper was justified in shooting a man in the leg during a traffic stop in Colorado Springs.

The shooting happened at around 1 a.m. on January 22, 2015 near the intersection of S. Academy Blvd. and Shelley Ave.

The DA’s office says Joseph Francis Cimeno, 55, twice refused to pull over for Trooper Gregory James and only did so after a lengthy pursuit.

The DA’s office says that when Cimeno finally stopped, he got out of his car, assaulted Trooper James and tried to grab the trooper’s gun.

Cimeno faces a charge of 2nd degree assault on a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 20.
