Central High gives back to legendary Pueblo graduate

Nearly 40 years after Eddie Lewis made history at Central High School, students and alumni are helping him with his battle with prostate cancer.

Central swim Coach Marla Lanham presented Lewis with a $4,800 check on Friday to help to him cover his medical costs. Lanham’s swimming classes began raising money for Lewis last month, and, coupled with donations raised by alumni, exceeded her expectations.

“I couldn’t believe it. It’s all the alumni and everybody pulling together,” Lanham said. About $1,500 raised came from students and the rest came from alumni around the country. Lanham said she received donations from Oregon, California and Washington, D.C.

“You know, I’ve had my mom and everybody ask me, ‘How do you feel about this?’ You can’t put words into it,” Lewis said.

Lanham said she is still receiving donations for Lewis. Donations can be sent to the school with checks made payable to Central High School. Lanham said to note in the check that the cause is for Eddie Lewis Wish for a Cure.
