Suthers leading Springs mayoral race in fundraising
Six candidates are running for Colorado Springs mayor, but one has the lead in fundraising.
The candidates are Tony Carpenter, Amy Lathen, Mary Lou Makepeace, Joel Miller, John Suthers and Lawrence Martinez.
According to the latest finance reports, Suthers is leading the fundraising race, with $219,757 so far. Next is Amy Lathen with $49,539 so far. Then Mary Lou Makepeace with $28,644. Then Joel Miller with $9,227. There were no reports for Tony Carpenter and Lawrence Martinez.
One political analyst said the lead in money will help Suthers, but it doesn’t mean it will be an automatic win.
“Don’t think this race is over yet, just because one candidate has a lot of money so far,” Bob Loevy said.
While he doesn’t think any of the candidates will catch up to Suthers in fundraising, he said they still have time to raise more money.
The election is April 7. To win, a candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote. If not, the top two candidates will face off in a run-off May 19.
