Mother Nature fooling plants with an early spring

It’s not uncommon for Colorado weather to seem like it can’t make up its mind, but the warm temperature bumps are causing major problems for vegetation.

“These up, and down temperatures and low humidity has just been devastating,” said Dan Robinson manager of Spencer’s Nursery

Throughout the years, native vegetation has adapted to the weather extremes Colorado offers up. But the real problem lies within plants that are not native. The warmer than average temperatures fool them into acting as if it’s spring. This in turn causes the plants to begin budding long before they should be according to Spenser’s Nursery.
“Plants have a secondary set of buds in them”, said Robinson. The primary buds come out in weather like this and get frozen and the secondary buds may or may not come out.”

If a plant can’t rebud, the chances of it surviving become very slim.

Robinson recommends plants that bud too early be covered. This will help to increase their chances of survival.
