GOP bills seek photo ID for Election Day voter registration

Colorado Republicans are making a push to require photo identification for voters who want to register on Election Day.

Democrats in 2013 used their majorities in both chambers to overhaul the state’s election rules and allow same-day voter registration. Republicans have been critical of the change, warning that it leaves the state vulnerable to fraud.

Two Republican-sponsored bills would require photo identification for people who register to vote on Election Day or the days immediately prior. One of the bills would ask voters to decide whether to enact the change, while the other would implement the requirement through the Legislature.

Both bills are likely to fail in the Democrat-led House committee that’s hearing them Wednesday.
