Colorado medical pot rules still in limbo

Colorado is moving ahead with its medical marijuana regulations – but questions remain about how far the state plans to go to drive medical pot users to the new recreational market.

Colorado is the only state that regulates the sale of pot for both medical and recreational purposes. A bill to renew the medical rules won initial approval in the state Senate Wednesday.

But the bill leaves some big questions unanswered. Senators removed many controversial items from the bill, including a provision to crack down on caregivers.

Caregivers are people designated to grow marijuana on behalf of others. Colorado health authorities say a few caregivers are wrongly operating as commercial growers without oversight.

Caregivers will be debated next week in a separate Senate bill.
