Gumbo cook-off brings Mardi Gras spirit to Manitou
It’s the closest you can get to New Orleans without leaving Colorado this weekend.
Chefs brought their secret recipes to the 22nd annual Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-off in Manitou Springs.
“I’m frying up some bell peppers and onion and celery along with a little roux,” Melissa Losavio said. She’s been cooking gumbo for three years. “We’ve got some big, bold flavors going in so I think it’s going to be a really rich flavor.”
Chefs from last year’s winning team, Manitou Springs Kiwanis Club, said they are looking forward another great competition.
“We have cooked at the Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-off since it started,” Fred Bormann said. “I really enjoy the camaraderie between the contestants.”
The gumbo, music and Mardi Gras apparel help bring the spirit of New Orleans to Southern Colorado.
“We’re going to have some gumbo, we’re going to have some drinks, we’re going to have a good time,” said Stacy Slay.
Several professional and amateur cooking teams participated in the gumbo competition.
Springs Orleans was voted best gumbo in the professional category. Alchemy Pub took second place and Cajun Vic finished in third place.
Cajuin Vic also won the People’s Choice Award and Showmanship Award.
Melissa Losavio won best gumbo in the amateur category. John Hudson was awarded second place and Chris Meyer took third place.
The gumbo had everyone talking about cajun cuisine, but it was a 3-month-old tiger cub that stole the show.
Serenity Springs Wildlife Center was taking donations for people to pet the cub and take pictures. The organization works with zoos, breeders, and private owners to help support and protect endangered animals.
