Smartphone app being used to scam victims

A smartphone app is being used to outsmart unsuspecting victims.

Scammers are using an application called “Spoof Card.” It allows the suspects to use any legitimate phone number to call and try and victimize people for large amounts of money.

In El Paso County, the scammers are using the Sheriff’s Office dispatch number of 719-390-5555.

“So a lot of people they’ll recognize the number from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, they’ll pick it up and they’ll think it’s a legitimate phone call,” said Sgt. John Sarkisian.

Sarkisian says they have received reports of at least 50 calls like this. One victim was scammed out of a thousand dollars.

“No one from the Sheriff’s Office will ever call and request money or tell you that you have a warrant,” said Sarkisian.

If you have any doubt, Sarkisian says you should hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office.
