UPDATED: Four Colorado cities make ‘most sexually violent’ list
A new report says four Colorado cities are among the top 24 most sexually violent in the nation.
The report, which was released by datingadvice.com, ranks Pueblo at number 22, Aurora at number 16, Colorado Springs at number 12 and Denver at number five.
Originally, the list ranked Pueblo at number 18, Aurora as number 13, Colorado Springs as number 9 and Denver as number 3. The website’s Editor-in-Chief said the reason for the change was a mistake in data collection.
One southern Colorado group says we can all help raise awareness about sexual assault.
“Talk about it with your friends, with your family. Let people know sexual assault is an issue and that it’s okay to come forward and report and that we shouldn’t blame victims if they do report”, said Michelle Schaunaman with TESSA.
Schaunaman said the high numbers in Colorado could mean that more people are reporting sexual assaults in our state, rather than remaining silent.
The list was compiled using FBI data on the number of rapes reported in each city. The FBI has two definitions of rape, the legacy definition and the revised definition. The latter broadens the definition of rape.
Datingadvice.com used FBI data from the revised definition. Some states don’t use that definition, and that could be part of the reason some states aren’t represented in the list.
