New option for Girl Scout cookie buyers this year

You no longer have to go to a stand, or wait for a knock on your door, to buy Girl Scout cookies.

Many customers usually find the scouts set up outside stores and businesses, or wait for door-to-door sales pitches from the girls.

This year, however, the traditional treats can be purchased online for the first time.

“Everything else is available online these days,” said Heather Burton, mother of three daughters selling cookies on Sunday, the opening day for 2015 sales. “I guess Girl Scout cookies are no different.”

The online option brings into question whether more customers will choose its convenience over personally meeting scouts to buy cookies. Scouts earn merit badges by learning a variety of skills during cookie sales.

“I never bought them before,” said Saskia Monteverde, a customer. “But now that I know I can get them online if I really like them, there’s not going to be a problem because I don’t have to wait for anybody to come to my door.”

“But it still allows the girls to come out and meet people, and interact and work on their business skills,” said Megan Jeffcoat, another customer.

Reagan Weese and Sami Price, two scouts who spoke with KRDO NewsChannel 13, said they expect to see as many customers as they usually do.

“If anything, online sales open cookies up to more customers,” said Wendy Price, Sami’s mother. “Now people who live out of town and are too far to get them in town can enjoy them.”
