Grass fire burning at Fort Carson

Authorities expected to have containment overnight Sunday on a grass fire that burned 106 acres at Fort Carson.

Crews responded to the fire around 2 p.m. southwest of Gate 20 and the Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex. The complex is on post property but open to civilians.

Authorities said they’ll investigate the possibility that a spent round from a gun at the range, sparked the fire.

Tom Joyce of the Fort Carson Fire Department said such a fire is a possibility that firefighters prepare for. He described the fire as “not serious,” and said only 15 firefighters from three departments were needed to battle the fire.

By 5 p.m., some crews began leaving. Authorities said the fire would calm down as winds died after sunset, and expected to have full containment soon.

The Fountain and Cheyenne Mountain fire departments assisted Fort Carson firefighters at the scene.
