Sheriff’s Office warns of scammer posing as deputy

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says someone impersonating a deputy is calling people and telling them they have to pay money to avoid being arrested.

The sheriff’s office says that the caller tells the vicim they have a warrant and that they have to report to the sheriff’s office and pay $1,000 to make it go away.

The sheriff’s office says it never notifies people about active warrants by phone, and that it never asks individuals to make payments to clear up a warrant.
