New rules for Colorado marijuana edibles begin today

Infused marijuana edibles will be forced to comply with new packaging, labeling and potency restrictions beginning on February 1st, 2015.

Under the new state regulations, all edibles must be sold in child resistant packaging and wrapped individually, or portioned into serving sizes of 10 milligrams or less of THC.

New labels will warn users that marijuana is unlawful outside of Colorado, and that it can take up to one to two hours to feel the full effects.

As our partners at KMGH in Denver report, Colorado has pushed for tougher restrictions and lower doses after several reported incidents last year. This included the death of a college student from Wyoming who jumped to his death from a Denver balcony. A police report said he ate six times the recommended amount of a pot cookie. Colorado also saw a spike in the number of kids treated for accidentally eating pot.

Colorado will also provide new incentives for dispensaries selling lower-dose edibles, including less rigorous testing for those products
