UPDATE: Police investigate rocks thrown at cars on interstate
Three teenage boys are being questioned after 15 vehicles were damaged by someone throwing rocks at cars along a stretch of I-25 in Pueblo.
Police say the boys are between the ages of 16 and 17.
Drivers said the incidents happened near the Abriendo Avenue exit on Tuesday evening. Police say one of the boys was taken into custody that night. The other two have been contacted and agreed to go to the police station to be interviewed.
Mary Pacheco said she was driving home with her daughter, Felicity, when she heard what sounded like an explosion.
“We heard a really loud bang,” said Pacheco. “The inside lights actually turned on and the buttons flew off and hit us and I was pretty scared. I wasn’t sure what caused it.”
She said she saw someone running up the hill near the exit ramp where she was hit. On Wednesday morning she examined the car and found a large dent inches from the windshield near her daughter.
“If it had been just a few seconds or a second before, it would have gone through the windshield,” said Pacheco. “If it had hit a child, that would be pretty major.”
Chelsea Betsch also said she was one of the drivers hit.
“All of a sudden I just heard this crash and there was glass everywhere and a big rock landed in my lap,” said Betsch. “It was really loud and I thought I was getting shot at and I guess I didn’t really know what to think. I saw a bunch of rocks on the ground already but I wasn’t sure what they were from.”
She pulled over right away and saw nine other cars also pulled over to examine the damage on their vehicles.
Pacheco and Betsch were not injured, but their wallets will take a hit.
“It’s really upsetting because who expects to have a $400 bill for a window you didn’t break?” said Betsch.
“Hopefully it won’t total my vehicle because I need a car and I will still have to pay the deductible which is a lot of money,” said Pacheco.
Police say the boys could face charges of damaging property, reckless endangerment and possibly other charges that have yet to be determined.
