Chief: Officers told teens to get out of car before shooting

Denver’s police chief says two officers told a group of teenagers to get out of a stolen car before opening fire and killing the 17-year-old girl behind the wheel.

Chief Robert White, citing preliminary information, told The Denver Post that, at some point, the vehicle started driving at one of the officers, putting him between the car and a brick wall and fence.

White says there are unanswered questions about Monday’s deadly encounter and he can’t judge whether the officers acted appropriately until investigations wrap up.

A passenger in the car, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of safety concerns, said driver Jessica Hernandez lost control of the vehicle after she was shot.

Protesters gathered Wednesday night outside the police station where the two officers work, hours after they were identified.
