Family escapes early morning fire unhurt
The Colorado Springs Fire Department says a family was able to escape a fire Wednesday morning (1/21/15) thanks in part to the fact that they had working smoke detectors.
The fire was reported at 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 900 block of Bennett Lane, which is near N. Circle Drive and E. Yampa St.
There was heavy fire coming from the home when firefighters arrived. A total of 31 firefighters responded.
The fire was extinguished at 2:49 a.m. and declared under control at 3:19 a.m.
Fire investigators say it was an electrical fire that started in the attack.
Two adults and two dogs live in the home. They all escaped unhurt. The fire department says their smoke alarms woke them up.
The National Fire Protection Association says three out of five home fire deaths occur in properties without working smoke alarms. It says the risk of dying in a house fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
