Delivery riders face challenges in snowy conditions

In wintry weather conditions like Wednesday’s most people try to avoid the roads, but it’s not an option for everyone.

For people who deliver for a living, there is no way around the slick roads.

“We do it every day, rain, snow, we’re out there,” Jimmy John’s deliveryman David Bressler said.

Deliverers at the downtown Colorado Springs Jimmy John’s have an added challenge. They deliver on bikes.

“This is where we start getting our bragging rights” deliveryman Arthur Navakuku said. “I like to feel, when we’re delivering on our bikes in this, we’re a step above the other delivery drivers that just take their cars everywhere.”

Employees said they keep warm by wearing many layers. And they’ve learned to be cautions on the road. Their challenge is to be “freaky fast,” as their motto calls for, while freaky safe.

“You learn shortcuts, then you also learn to watch out for cars and different things like that, like manouvering around things,” deliverywoman Anneliese Martin said. “Just keeping an eye out is the best safety to have.”
