Wanted man walks into high school, takes seat in classroom

Academy School District 20 says a wanted man walked into Pine Creek High School and took a seat in a classroom full of students Friday. He has been identified as Kelly Raftery, 35.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m.

Police say Raftery did not threaten anyone.

A student notified security officers, who approached Raftery to question him. A school resource officer also responded.

The security officers detained Raftery. The school district says he was removed from the school less than five minutes after walking in. Police say Raftery appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Police and school security searched the high school and Raftery’s car as a precaution.

Raftery was arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant. Colorado Springs Police say he was also served and released on misdemeanor charges of trespassing and interfering with staff and students at an educational facility.

Academy District 20 Chief of Security Brian Grady and Colorado Springs Police are investigating the incident to determine if any procedures need to be changed to improve security at the school.
