Commissioner’s Senate run begins 2016 race early

It wasn’t too long ago most TV commercials seemed to be about politics.

Analysts say get ready for it again. The first candidate for U.S. Senate, in a race still 22 months away, is throwing his hat in the ring.

“There are people that are having problems right now that need to be dealt with,” said Darryl Glenn, Republican U.S. Senate candidate.

The El Paso County commissioner admits his campaign is off to an early start, but one analyst says that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“It’s got obvious advantages, most people think it can be a good thing,” said former State Senator Andy McElhany.

He spent 14 years in the Legislature as a Colorado Republican leader, though he has not endorsed a candidate yet.

“While they’re trying to make up their mind, Daryl can be collecting endorsements and money which shuts out those sources to any potential opponents coming up,” he said, adding the race will still be huge. “Some estimates, this last one, had expenditures close to $100 million. By the time you add what the candidates and interest groups put in.

But if you’re experiencing voter fatigue, McElhany said you’re not alone. He said and that could lead to a downside in the early campaign.

“We’ve been a swing state, so we’re putting up with what seems like endless brutal TV commercials that goes on and on. We’re going to have to get used to it.

Glenn was just re-elected to the commissioner’s seat in last November’s race

He grew up in the Springs and sites his 20 years in the Air Force, along with city and county public office seats as experience to qualify him in the U.S. Senate.
