Bill Elder to become interim sheriff Jan 1
Bill Elder will become El Paso County interim Sheriff Jan 1.
El Paso County commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday to appoint Elder as interim sheriff. He will have that post from Jan 1 until Jan 13, when he is sworn in officially as sheriff.
It comes after El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa submitted early retirement last week effective December 31st.
Elder said he is ready to step into the job.
“Some of the issues that have gone on in the last six months are behind us. Trying to win back some of the hearts and minds of the employees and the citizens in the county”, he said.
Sheriff Maketa is still the subject of investigations regarding his relationships with three under-sheriffs and the accused mismanagement of a near-million dollar account.
