Colorado hospitals to be penalized for Medicare readmissions

More than half of Colorado hospitals that treat Medicare patients will be penalized for having high readmission rates under the federal health care law.

The Denver Post reports that 27 of 47 Colorado hospitals will see Medicare payments reduced by an average of 0.33 percent this year according to both federal data and Kaiser Health News reports.

The five hospitals that will see the largest penalties are Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta, Parker Adventist Hospital, St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora and the Medical Center of Aurora.

The Centura hospital system, which includes St. Thomas More and Parker Adventist hospitals, estimates it will lose $360,000 of its $2.7 billion in revenue.

Colorado hospitals performed better than the national average.
