Students have a senior prom for senior citizens

It’s a little early for prom season, but it wasn’t your typical prom Wednesday.

The Centennial High School Girl’s Cabinet held a senior prom for senior citizens at the Villa Pueblo Senior Living Community.

It was 90-year-old Sarah Zamecki’s first prom.

“I never had a prom. When I graduated that was World War II,” she said.

When she heard there was a prom, she knew she had to get ready.

“I went up, combed my hair and then I came down,” she said.

Even though she didn’t receive a corsage or wore a prom dress, all she was looking for was someone to dance with, since her dance partner passed away almost 20 years ago.

Jorie Anaya was one of the organizers of the event. She said since Centennial is planning a prom, her group wanted to plan a prom for senior citizens.

“Some of the citizens here, they didn’t go to their prom. This was a chance for them to hang out, have fun, but also maybe do things they haven’t done before,” she said.

Even though Zamecki wasn’t crowned queen, all that mattered to her was she was able to dance with another person to her favorite songs.
