Boxer Mike Alvarado arrested after Denver police find gun

Denver police say they arrested boxer Mike Alvarado this weekend after finding a handgun in his vehicle’s glove compartment.

Police reports say the former champion from Denver was inside a Hummer that officers stopped early Saturday because it had expired license plates.

Authorities say Alvarado appeared to be pushing something into the glove compartment and trying to close it.

Alvarado told officers the Hummer was his and he knew the plates were expired. Police say they took him into custody on other outstanding arrest warrants, and they found the gun while searching his vehicle.

As a convicted felon, the 34-year-old Alvarado cannot legally possess a firearm.

Alvarado is a World Boxing Organization junior welterweight world title holder.

Court records show he was released from the Denver jail, but they do not list an attorney for him. Alvarado’s upcoming bout against Brandon Rios is uncertain.
